Welcome to Mojave Movement Arts Center in Mojave, California

Offering classes in Classical Ballet, Modern Jazz, and Tap

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your interest in Mojave Movement Arts Center. I opened the dance school in 1993 with the intention of providing the best possible training in classical ballet to residents of Southeast Kern County and the Antelope Valley.

The student count at the studio is small, but the success ratio is satisfactory. Several Mojave Movement Arts Center students have made the transition from small town studio to national ballet school programs and conservatories:

  • Megan Bower (Edwards AFB) went to Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Summer Program on scholarship, apprenticed at Pacific Northwest Ballet, studied at Alvin Ailey-Fordham University and is currently performing and teaching at Arizona Ballet.
  • Meghann Clapper (Palmdale) received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Dance at the University of California, Riverside, danced for Disneyland, and graduated with a double major in Dance and English in 2004.
  • Abel Costa (Edwards AFB) apprenticed at Colorado Ballet, was principle dancer, rehearsal assistant and choreographer at New England Ballet, and is now a free-lance choreographer in New York.
  • Heather Dennis (California City) will graduate in 2005 with a B.F.A. in Ballet from University of Utah.
  • Christina Harris (Lancaster) was accepted at the Orange County High School of Performing Arts, Classical Division; studied on scholarship at the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre summer program and received an invitation to study in the year-round program. She was designated a California Arts Scholar in 2003 and was accepted in the Dance Program at the California Institute of the Arts.
  • Robert Irving (Boron) was designated a California Arts Scholar in 2001 and is pursuing a dance career in Los Angeles.
  • Daniel Kennedy (Quartz Hill) went to Boston Ballet and Houston Ballet summer programs on scholarship, apprenticed at Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre; he performs frequently with Southern California regional companies, and will graduate from University of California, Irvine, with a double major in Dance and Business.
  • Caitlynn Spangle (Mojave), has twice been designated a California Arts Scholar, and is a dance major a University of California, Irvine.
  • Kayla Steckel (California City) is a California Arts Scholar for 2005. She studied at BalletMet summer program in Ohio and will continue in their pre-professional year-round program.

Recently, we produced our 9th production of the Nutcracker. Through an extraordinary combination of support from Cerro Coso Community College and the area businesses, we have been able to produce a classical ballet in a gymnasium-cum-theatre every two years beginning in 1988.

In addition, many of our students are members of the Palmdale Playhouse Youth Dance Ensemble, where they have great opportunities to perform and create dance in a professional theatre setting. Guest artists teach workshops, coach classical variations, and create new choreography for the members. The company also presents ballets, such as Nutcracker, Graduation Ball, The Skaters, Cinderella, La Boutique Fantasque, Pas de Quatre, and Peter and the Wolf, as well as student-created modern dance works.
